A couple of weeks ago, we took a drive up to Malaysia for QingMing (the Chinese All Souls’ Day).

I’ve been doing this for many years now, even though I don’t subscribe to the faith. I do it because Dad is getting old and the 8 hour drive would be too taxing for him.

His hometown is a small sleepy town in the middle of nowhere.

We would start off very early on a Saturday morning and arrive in the mid afternoon. Check into the hotel/motel, rest and then have dinner with the relatives.

The next morning, usually around 7am, we would climb up the hill with all the prayer stuff and begin the tradition.

It involves the clearing of the grave site, laying the food/drink offerings and plenty of burning.. joss sticks, joss papers etc etc.

And by 9am, we’re done.

Back to the hotel for a shower and then we’re on our way out after lunch.

That’s about 18-20 hours of driving in less than 2 days.
